BITU writes to Fly Jamaica regarding 'unfair treatment' of Jamaican workers

The Bustamante Industrial Trade Union (BITU) has written to the management of Fly Jamaica regarding claims by a group of Jamaican flight attendants at the airline that they are being treated unfairly compared with their Guyanese counterparts.

In a report carried by TVJ News Monday night, the flight attendants lamented that their contracts were not being renewed. They also complained that they are not being assigned to flights even though their contracts are still valid.

Rudolph Thomas, BITU Assistant General Secretary, says the affected flight attendants are not unionised.

Mr. Thomas says they were not given a reason for their contracts not being renewed, and as a result, the union has written to the company requesting clarification on the decision.

In the meantime, Mr. Thomas says he is hoping that another dispute with Fly Jamaica that is being dealt with by the Ministry of Labour will be resolved shortly.

It surrounds wages, fringe benefits and conditions of employment.

"They (The Labour Ministry) encouraged the parties to have local level discussions and the direction those discussions have taken seems to indicate there will be no meeting of the minds between the parties and so the Ministry of Labour has been requested to give the matter its immediate focus so as to bring swift resolve to that issue," he declared.

He said based on the outcome of the discussions with Fly Jamaica on the two issues, a meeting will be called with all Flight Attendants to discuss the next move.
